Dracaena compacta, commonly known as Compact Dragon Tree or Janet Craig, is a popular houseplant that belongs to the Dracaena genus. It is native to tropical regions of Africa and is known for its attractive, dark green foliage and compact growth habit. The plant features dense, upright stems with glossy, lance-shaped leaves that grow in a rosette arrangement.
We are currently offering 5 gallon pots – plants are approximately 5 feet tall.
Care guidelines
- Light: Dracaena compacta thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves. Place the plant near a window with filtered light or in a well-lit spot indoors.
- Temperature: This plant prefers average room temperatures between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C). It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures, but avoid exposing it to drafts or extreme temperature fluctuations.
- Watering: Allow the top inch (2.5 cm) of the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it’s important to ensure the plant is not sitting in standing water. Use your finger to check the soil moisture level before watering and adjust the frequency according to the plant’s needs.
- Humidity: Dracaena compacta appreciates moderate humidity levels. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves occasionally or placing a tray filled with water and pebbles near the plant. Avoid placing the plant near dry air sources like heaters or air conditioners.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting soil for your Dracaena compacta. A mix that retains some moisture while allowing excess water to drain is ideal. Adding perlite or sand can help improve drainage.
- Fertilizer: Feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength every 2-3 months during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilization in fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows down.
- Pruning: Prune any yellow or brown leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance. You can also trim the plant to control its size and shape. Use clean, sharp pruning shears to make clean cuts just above a leaf node.
- Repotting: Dracaena compacta grows relatively slowly, so repotting is typically required every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a slightly larger pot with drainage holes, and refresh the soil during repotting.
- Toxicity: Keep in mind that Dracaena compacta is toxic to pets if ingested, so it’s important to place it out of their reach.
